A foundation that was created through a legacy
The Paul Milliet Foundation, recognized as a public utility, was created in 1926 following the bequest granted to the SACD by the librettist Paul Milliet (1848-1924), known for having collaborated with Jules Massenet on the librettos of the operas Hérodiade and Werther.
Concretely, what actions are carried out by the Paul Milliet Foundation?
1. Accompany authors
- A prize to recognize the work of talented authors in the spirit of the famous dialoguist Henri Jeanson
Since 1996, the Henri Jeanson Prize (bequest of his widow Claude Marcy) was created in collaboration with the SACD, to reward an author whose humour, insolence and dramatic power perpetuate the memory and commitment of Henri Jeanson, renowned screenwriter.
This award is presented each year upon appointment of the SACD Board of Directors.
- Emergency aid to alleviate life’s difficulties
The Foundation provides financial support to authors in great difficulty through direct support.
In 2013, the field of assistance to authors was opened – regardless of their age – to the management of all the life difficulties they may face: loss of resources, housing problems, inadequate social protection, life accidents, over-indebtedness, sickness, old age.
The Milliet Foundation’s emergency aid is for all authors, active or retired. It is awarded through a social commission of the SACD.
2. What’s next? The Paul Milliet Foundation’s support for authors in social dependency
For nearly fifty years, the Foundation managed a residence and retirement home open to authors, located at the Château du Rondon, near Olivet (Loiret). In the 80s, she had to part with it because she no longer met the reception standards.
At the beginning of the 2000s, the Foundation therefore financial partnership with the Maison Nationale des Artistes de Nogent sur Marne as well as with the Cordia residence in Paris, ensuring priority access to these establishments for authors aged 60 and over.
The key figures of the foundation
- 30 authors in difficulty are helped each year
- An annual budget of 60,000€ for relief workers
- 1 prize, perpetuating the memory of Henri Jeanson, for the authors

A word from Brigitte Buc, President of the Paul Milliet Foundation
“Stories are essential throughout our lives. They move us, make us laugh, think, live other lives than ours.
They give access to feelings, thoughts, emotions larger than those we know.
They broaden our perception of the world.
Behind each story, there are writers, who dream and imagine what without them and them, would not have a form.
To practice this art, they often live in precarious conditions, and almost all undergo moments of depression in their profession.
They are then exposed more than the others to great material and moral difficulties, because less protected.
No unemployment, no intermittency, few sick leave, no paid leave.
The Paul Milliet Foundation has been helping them cope with life’s accidents since 1926 so that they can live and work serenely again, waiting for better days.”
