Inventorying archaeological heritage: a mission of the State
The National archaeological map enables “predictive” maps of archaeological heritage. It also allows the development of research programs at multiple scales and themes as can be read in the National programming of archaeological research, The protection of the remains as regards the environment and urban planning is also integrated into this system.
The National archaeological map is based on a set of computerized databases in constant enrichment in the regional departments of archaeology. Its realization is a mission that the State ensures with the assistance of public institutions and local authorities that have research activities.
A tool for territory management
The Archaeological map is a fundamental working instrument for the management of the territory and the consideration of archaeological remains, in particular for:
- to draw up management and spatial planning documents, to make them aware of local urban planning (PLU) and territorial coherence schemes (Scot),
- carry out impact studies,
- guide archaeological prescription strategies in work projects affecting the subsoil, soil and built heritage (roads and railways, quarries, wind projects...).
The map has over 500,000 archaeological features and is far from exhaustive, as many remains remain to be discovered. Archaeological works of all kinds as well as computerized data processing continue to enrich our knowledge.
Consult the national archaeological map
The National archaeological map is available on request at regional archaeological service each Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs (Drac), with levels of information accuracy that reconcile the requirements of knowledge with those of heritage protection.
