Joint research units
Located throughout the country, the Joint Research Units (UMR) are laboratories that bring together researchers affiliated with the CNRS, universities, the Ministry of Culture and operators of preventive archaeology.

Researchers gathered within the UMR can jointly develop research around chronological and/or geographical, methodological and epistemological themes.
The UMR are therefore central players in the implementation of a national research policy.
On 15 July 2021, the framework agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) was renewed. It marks the common will of these two institutions to:
- perpetuate and consolidate committed cooperation
- share the latest scientific knowledge
- open up new research themes and develop innovative approaches
- support the dissemination and exploitation of research results
- maintain a high level of scientific requirement for all personnel attached to it.
17 UMR of archaeology benefit from a partnership with the Ministry of Culture.
