The Louvre-Lens, the fruit of an exemplary partnership.
The Louvre-Lens is the fruit of a exemplary partnership between the State and local authorities (Region, Department, Agglomeration Community, City) , which is expressed through the creation of a Public Institution for Cultural Cooperation (EPCC) involving all parties.
The Louvre has made its name, its know-how and its collections available, while the communities – including the region that owns the building – are responsible for the operation of the institution. But the Louvre-Lens is not an antenna of the Louvre, it is a «Louvre otherwise», in the words of Henri Loyrette, curator and art historian: it is a «Louvre à Lens» adapted to the territory and to different audiences. It is the culmination of a fundamental reflection on another way to discover the Louvre and the national collections.
The prefect of Pas-de-Calais has notably announced the assistance of the State and its operators, on par with the Hauts-de-France region, in the renovation of the Louvre-Lens Time Gallery.
A museum anchored in its territory
Created with the hope of a renewal for the Mining Basin, the Louvre-Lens has, in 10 years, solidly found its audience and succeeded in the challenge of land transformation through a rich programme of workshops, visits, shows and events for all.
Since its opening, it has been one of the key elements of a change of focus on the Mining Basin, which today makes it a flagship destination in Hauts-de-France.
In all aspects of its programming, the museum regularly promotes this evolving “cultural landscape” classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 10 years ago It is a major cultural player in the promotion, attractiveness and development of the Mining Basin.
The State committed to the renewal of the Mining Basin.
More broadly on the Mining Basin, the Prefect of Pas-de-Calais also returned to Mining Basin Renewal Commitment (MRBA), signed in 2017 by the Prime Minister the partners, which aims to change the lives of the inhabitants and make the territory more attractive by acting on the levers of public action. Access to culture is one of these levers, and the DRAC Hauts-de-France is committed on a daily basis to make these projects live to make culture accessible to the greatest number.
Finally the prefect has notably announced the holding of cultural meetings of the Mining Basin in the summer of 2023.
