Archaeology in the Pays de la Loire: Missions and distribution of competences
Archaeological research is conducted by multiple actors - public and private, professionals and volunteers - under the control of the Ministry of Culture represented in the regions by the DRAC. Depending on their status, these actors invest in a privileged way in one of the fields of the archaeological discipline - field research, protection, conservation, valorization - and in one of the two modes of research, preventive or programmed.
Archaeology and its actors are structured around eight missions main.
The programming of research, theauthorization and the prescription of archaeological operations, the protection of archaeological heritage are the state prerogative and its regional services, the Regional Cultural Affairs Directorates.
The research, theinventory, the conservation, the catering and the valorization, are shared missions by all those involved in archaeology.
Research programming
National research axes are defined by the CNRA. At regional level, the DRAC draw up a programme in relation to these lines of research, after consulting the CTRA.
Within this framework, public institutions, CNRS and Inrap, universities and local authorities guide their own research policies.

Authorization and limitation
The DRAC allows programmed operations related to the programming of the research defined with the CIRA. It decides to carry out preventive diagnostics and excavations that it prescribes according to the impact of the development on the heritage. Authorization and prescription take the form of a prefectoral decree.

Protection
The DRAC takes measures to protect the archaeological heritage. It defines areas with high archaeological potential, archaeological zoning, in which preventive archaeology procedures are particularly likely to be applied. It decides on the inscription and investigates the classification of archaeological sites under the title of Historical Monuments.
