The control artistic
Expression of the public will to support creation and raise awareness of the art of our time, «the obligation of decoration of public constructions», commonly called «1% artistic» is a specific procedure for ordering works from artists that is binding on the State, its public institutions and local authorities. It is in this context that the UPPA Pau Campus will soon host a contemporary work of monumental type realized by Marianne Vieulès, graduated from the European School of Image of Poitiers and winner of this public commission.
- Enhance the artistic and natural heritage of the campus;
- Strengthen the attractiveness and openness towards the city of UPPA;
- Assert yourself as a figure at the new campus entrance.
Meet me at thehas meteorite?
It came from outer space (English: It comes from space) , is a sculpture imagined from a tectite from the UPPA geological collection, which takes the form of a comet. It is a light sculpture, autonomous in energy that calls to touch. Each part is covered on the surface with different mineral charges: one preserves heat and the other is phosphorescent. For example, white phosphorus and Scheelite crystals will allow for shine and phosphorescence. Talc powder, wollastonite and calcium silicate will retain heat. Worthy of a chemical composition, this creation reflects the different fields of scientific research of the UPPA.
Marianne Vieulès imagines “that the inhabitants and visitors of the UPPA will meet at the meteorite, take their place inside and also invent uses, stories and powers like those given to the meteorites that preceded it.”
Erected like a symbolic totem pole at the entrance of the campus, the meteorite sculpture will integrate into its environment as a new meeting place. A breakthrough in its lower part will offer an appropriation of the work to all users of the campus: we can cross it, sit there alone or with two, to take a break, wait for his appointment, discuss, share a vague and/or exciting idea, or rest to feel the heat a little longer than a touch.
A mineral work straight ahead coming from space
Marianne Vieulès loves to tell stories that combine science and poetry, create a universe and enrich our imagination. For several years now, it has been gathering information and stories about meteorites, their interpretations and meanings. For her winning sculpture, she was inspired precisely by the meteorite of Willamette in which we can sit inside her cavities.
In an effort to get closer to her work, Marianne Vieulès was inspired by the statues to be touched, such as that of actress Margarett Cook, in front of the Stockholm Drama Theatre in Sweden. The statue is held at 37°C, the temperature of the human body. Passers-by touch its nose and belly to feel its warmth. In the heart of the university campus, It came from outer space will release the same energy and its appearance will evolve during the day and night, depending on the mineral charges that make it up.
