Department of Oise: the private mansion in Senlis located at 16 rue Bellon
Built around 1705, the Hotel de la rue Bellon is the only example in Senlis of a mansion between courtyard and garden, whose classical facades are characterized by the symmetry of the structure, the rigour of the lines and the discretion of the elements of decor peculiar to the «simple manner» which predominates at the end of Louis XIV’s reign. Following the construction of a new royal road in 1753, an urban planning project of great modernity, which now borders the western side of the hotel, the acquisition of neighboring plots allows to expand the garden and to develop it into a large park in the heart of the city. Spared by the major fires of 1914, the hotel became the residence of Marshal Foch, from where he left, with General Weygand, to impose the armistice on November 11, 1918. This event gives it a major memorial dimension for the history of the city of Senlis at the XXe century.
Inscription in title of the historical monuments of the mansion, facades and roofs, and of the two internal staircases of the hotel, as well as of the courtyard with its wall fence and monumental portal, and the land right of way of the park including the current portion of garden with its fencing walls by the Order of July 20, 2021.
The protection procedure
The request for protection under the Historical Monuments of a monument is made by any person having an interest in it (owner, association, etc.). The protection of buildings, motivated by an interest in art and/or history, takes place after consulting the CRPA and takes effect after signing the orders by the regional prefect. The buildings listed under the title of historical monuments are the subject of special provisions for their conservation so that all maintenance work, repair, restoration or modification may be carried out while maintaining the interest which justified their protection. Protected monuments are monitored by the Regional Conservation of Historic Monuments (DRAC)
