Titled “ Orchies: the discovery of the beautiful north, four statues of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries », this brochure presents the fruit of an operation carried out by Inrap that led to the discovery of an occupation of the thirteenth -fourteenth century and the discovery of four statues: two statues of saints of the early sixteenth century of remarkable quality (Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Agnes), and two smaller statues of monks from the second half of the 16th century.
Stylistic observations and the provenance of the works and their material indicate that these four works from different periods were produced in the region. Their discovery therefore represents an enrichment for our knowledge of the monumental sculpture of Northern France, whose preserved examples are few. The statues of saints are major examples of sculpture from the first third of the 16th century, a transition period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Northern Europe. Their exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille makes it possible to place these works in their production context. Their presentation alongside contemporary paintings and sculptures fosters closer links between different art forms, notably with some panels and altarpieces executed in northern France or Antwerp.
