The Curator of Antiquities and Works of Art (CAOA) of Centre-Val de Loire
The curator of antiquities and works of art (CAOA) is the regional curator of historical monuments, at the departmental level, for everything related to the protection and conservation of movable objects.
Mis à jour le
In accordance with the law of 31 December 1913 on Historical Monuments, recast in the Wealth code, the CAOA reports to the Direction régionale des affaires culturelles (DRAC). It carries out its regulatory tasks under the scientific supervision of the Regional Conservation of Historic Monuments (CRMH).
Its field of intervention is the movable heritage, private or public, excluding written archives and museum objects. All objects are taken into account: civil, religious, medical, scientific, technical, educational…
Its missions
Keep an eye on
The CAOA is responsible for monitoring objects protected under the Historical Monuments, which are highly exposed to the risks of damage and theft. This control mission takes the form of a proofing on the ground that must be carried out every 5 years. For the proofing to be valid, it must be exhaustive and validated by the owner and, in the case of churches, the assignee (parish priest).
Protect
The CAOA is responsible for the legal protection of movable property. Exploring the territory, he can spot objects deserving protection under the Historical Monuments. More rarely, the application for protection may come from the owner, the assignee or a third party who addresses it to the CAOA.
He prepares the documentary file of protection by a thorough study of the works that he submits once a year to the Departmental Commission of Movable Objects (CDOM), chaired by the Prefect of the Department.
Value
Valorization, which comes at the end of the operational chain, amounts to restoring the heritage to the community and, in priority, to its inhabitants.
The CAOA plays an advisory role for the presentation of works (soclage, lighting, etc.). May assist in the development of public information materials (signs, cartels, brochures, etc.)
