The Minister of Culture and Communication, Aurélie Filippetti, and her Palestinian counterpart, Anwar Abu Eisheh, signed a film co-production agreement today on rue de Valois.
The Palestinian Territories is home to prominent filmmakers, including Elia Suleiman, who won awards at the Cannes and Venice film festivals, as well as a new wave of young filmmakers who are very active in both fiction and documentary.
Over the past 15 years, many Palestinian films have been supported by the Fonds Sud Cinéma or more recently by World Cinema Aid, such as Rashid Masharawi’s Palestine Stereo, selected this year at the Toronto Film Festival.
By allowing co-produced films to access all support mechanisms, in France as well as in the Palestinian Territories, the agreement will facilitate the financing of bilateral co-productions involving artistic and technical cooperation.
The minority co-producer’s share will be at least 20% but, by way of derogation, may be reduced to 10% after agreement by the authorities of both parties, taking into account the artistic and technical collaborations of each co-producer.
The agreement reached today also includes provisions to encourage joint initiatives in the fields of training in film professions, image education, the exchange of know-how between professionals, the distribution and dissemination of works and the conservation of film heritage.
For France, this is the 54th international co-production agreement.
Last year, of the 279 feature films approved by the Centre National du Cinéma et de l'Image Animée (CNC), 129 were officially co-produced with one or more foreign countries.
