What are European Heritage Days?
European Heritage Days are the annual event to discover Mayotte through its monuments, sites, traditions. The actors of the preservation and enhancement of the heritage are invited to present projects in order to make it fully live during these three days, through visits, exhibitions, animations. They are an opportunity to make known to the widest public the local cultural heritage in all its diversity: museums, eco-museums, monuments, archaeological sites, intangible cultural heritage...
The process consists in submitting a cultural heritage enhancement project focused on the JEP weekend and the Friday that precedes it, specifically dedicated to schools as part of the operation "Raise your eyes!". The Ministry of Culture intends to make these days the great annual event where heritage actors present their approach, open the doors of monuments and sites to the widest public, and thus allow everyone to rediscover the cultural riches, at local, national and European level.
The whole cultural heritage is concerned: civil and religious buildings, historical or memorial sites, regional languages, traditions, know-how, traditional knowledge, music, song, dance, performing arts, literature, aspects of matrimony, etc.
For its 41e edition, the European Heritage Days will take place on Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September 2024 on the themes "Heritage of routes, networks and connections" and "Maritime Heritage". The applicants, based in Mayotte, present their animation and valorisation project. An operating grant of up to €5,000 can be allocated to them. Their actions will be enhanced by the communication tools implemented by DAC Mayotte and the Ministry.

- Participate in the development of the public and the development of a sustainable policy of preservation and enhancement of heritage at the local level;

Amount of grant allocated: 5,000 euros.
Project proposed and implemented by the Dembéni-Mamoudzou Agglomeration Community (CADEMA).
Project Description
The project consisted of organizing heritage and artistic walks for young people aged 15 to 18 from the priority neighborhoods of the cities of Mamoudzou and Dembéni, some are in school, others not.
The project was organized in three phases:
- At first, the young people discovered their heritage from a new angle: testimonies of actors came to enhance the walks to push them to deepen their knowledge and vision of the territory.
Examples of sites selected for heritage and artistic walks: Church of Our Lady of Fatima, former court, Tomb of Sultan Adriantsouly, M'Gombani huts, Papaya Square, the Rectorate, the Prefecture, the mangrove. - In a second step, the young people benefited from the support of a professional photographer to guide them in the photographic artistic creation turned towards the valorisation of the heritage. Each youth had the opportunity to take photos of their discoveries. One shot per youth was selected.
- In a third step, writing workshops were offered to young people to allow them to put words on their feelings, their emotions and describe their imagination through the photos they had captured during the heritage and artistic walks. The work produced during these workshops served as a cartel to describe the cliché of each young person during the restitution exhibitions of the project. This cartel will then be used as a description of the book that will be published to close the project.
