Ten percent, The Bureau of Legends, Marie-Antoinette, HPI… These French series, which have been a great success internationally, surely tell you something. It must be said that for several years the series sector has undoubtedly the wind in its sails. According to a Study of the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (CNC) on audiovisual fiction in 2022, all indicators – production, partnerships, dissemination, export – are green. The same goes for audiences. To cite just one result, the top 100 TV audiences in 2022 were all French for the second year in a row.
It is in this context that Rachida Dati, Minister of Culture, opened on Friday, March 15, on the occasion of a trip to Lille, the 2024 edition of Series Mania, the international festival dedicated to television series. The Minister welcomed this festival, whose attendance figures – 85,000 visitors in 2023 – make it a real popular success and an international reference event on series. It also welcomed the strength of French audiovisual fiction, which creativity ", the " diversity ” and the “ renewal » make the sector particularly attractive to young people.
A training challenge
Since 2021, the festival has developed a major educational tool: the Series Mania Institute, aiming to make the Hauts-de-France region and the Lille metropolis one of the essential poles of the series. The first European institute entirely dedicated to training in series professions, this project, winner of the call for projects «La Grande fabrique de l'image», funded by France 2030, aims to anticipate the sector’s needs for professionals and create strong and tangible links with professional networks.
The professional integration of young people from Hauts-de-France far from employment and culture is also a strong stake of the project through the Springboard program. This inclusive training was created in 2022 in partnership with the Cinefabrique and New entries, two training organizations also winners of «La grande fabrique de l'image». Free and without qualification, the Tremplin is an integration course focused on audiovisual professions, from writing to post-production. « An essential program for the sector’s professional renewal ”, according to the Minister of Culture, who met with the Tremplin youth pilot program.
