The Mission for the Search and Restitution of Cultural Property Looted between 1933 and 1945 (M2RS) is a service of the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Culture, attached to the Legal and International Affairs Service.
It is responsible for directing and facilitating the public policy of research, repair and memory of the dispossession of cultural property. It helps to identify and better understand the works of dubious origin preserved by public institutions.
The Mission for the Search and Restitution of Cultural Property Plundered between 1933 and 1945 has two main objectives:
- Define, coordinate and implement research and reporting policy and contribute to public and professional awareness
- to study, in conjunction with the cultural institutions concerned, individual cases of dispossession of cultural property, at the initiative of families, cultural institutions or on its own initiative, with a view to reaching a remedy (restitution or compensation).
