On 16 June 2022, five days before the Fête de la musique celebrated its 40th anniversary, the History Committee of the Ministry of Culture organised a meeting at the Opéra-Comique dedicated to this event, now firmly inscribed in the calendar and shared, on five continents, by more than a hundred countries.
The book gathers all the papers, interventions and round tables of this day, to which are added six interviews with certain national (in Germany and in the United States) or territorial (in France and in Berlin) coordinators.
Three chapters structure the book: «Genesis and evolution of Music Festival»; «Music Festival today, here and elsewhere»; «Music Festival in the mirror of musical practices in the digital age».
Echoing the contributions of the decision-makers, actors or researchers present at the Opéra-Comique, this book also offers a rich iconography, as evidenced in particular by the meeting, from 1982 to 2023, of all the official posters of the Fête de la musique.
Actors or witnesses of the genesis and evolution of the Fête de la musique for four decades, cultural policy makers, event coordinators in France or abroad, music professionals, historians, sociologists, etc. about 30 contributors – including Jack Lang, initiator of the Festival in 1982, and the current Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul Malak – share their thoughts on a demonstration that, for forty years, mobilizes the world, every June 21, tens of millions of people.
