Understanding public debate, forming an opinion, making informed decisions, is first of all to acquire a solid statistical culture!
For the first time, a joint mission of the INSEE General Inspectorate (IG Insee), the General Inspectorate for Education, Sport and Research (IGÉSR) and the General Inspectorate for Cultural Affairs (IGAC) was devoted to the statistical culture of the French, at the request of the Autorité de la statistique publique (ASP).
Acquiring a solid statistical culture means being able to understand statistical information and develop a critical eye, at a time when the multiplicity of media channels reinforces the risk of dissemination of erroneous or poorly substantiated information.
The acquisition of this knowledge base necessary for public life must be based on a set of key audiences: students, teachers, journalists, media, public decision-makers, elected officials, social workers and mediators.
The mission adopted 15 recommendations.
The notion of statistical literacy is little present in France and is not the subject of any recognized, shared definition.
We will then speak of "statistical culture".
3 areas of action to remember:
- Making statistical culture visible
- Propose levers adapted to different audiences to develop skills in the field
- Expand, coordinate and disseminate initiatives
