Tours de la Rochelle
All three designed to serve as residences, two towers out of three (namely the Saint Nicolas Tower and the Chain Tower) were also places of detention between the 16th and 18th centuries for the Huguenots and then for foreign sailors. They then became military prisons in the 19th century. The Lantern tower was used to disarm boats upstream of the port and served as a lighthouse.
