«Remarkable garden» label
Established in 2004, the «Jardin remarquable» label distinguishes gardens and parks of cultural, aesthetic, historical or botanical interest, whether public or private.
This quality label is awarded by the Ministry of Culture for a renewable period of 5 years. It gives rise to advantages in terms of communication by the Ministry of Culture.

This map presents all the gardens labeled by the Ministry of Culture. Detailed sheets allow you to discover these exceptional places and share them on social networks.
What is the «Jardin remarquable» label?
The establishment of the label «Remarkable garden» responds to the wish of promote and promote parks and gardens open to the public and particularly well maintained. This state label, awarded for 5 years renewable, meets criteria of requirement and quality on the composition (organization of spaces), the integration in the site and the quality of the surroundings, the remarkable elements (water, factories, plant architectures, etc.), botanical interest, historical interest, the reception of the public and maintenance in respect of environmental quality. It takes into account the diversity of parks and gardens and can concern small or large gardens, historical or contemporary and all styles.
The label commits the owners to ensure regular maintenance of their garden, to open it to the visit at least 40 days in the year and 6 hours a day, to participate at least in a national operation (See you in the gardens and/or to European Heritage Days), to make available to the public information documents (map, history, botanical indications) and to affix in a place visible to the public an enamelled plaque with the logo of the label «Remarkable garden».
What are the methods of awarding the «Remarkable Garden» label?
The file must include:
- a description accompanied by a photographic file;
- a situation map and a current plan of the garden or an aerial photograph;
- a cadastral plan or list of cadastral parcels;
- a history;
- Historical plans (if available)
- a list of outstanding features (ponds, waterfalls, statues, caves, etc.);
- the list of outstanding plants;
- a description of how the garden is managed (human resources, management plan, certified ecological management, reasoned, managed, outsourced, etc.);
- a list of the documentation made available to the public, as well as any activities for young people;
- a photographic dossier containing at least 8 images in paper or digital format;
- a written commitment to open the garden to visit at least 40 days a year, between January 1 and December 31, and at least 6 hours a day, specifying the actual opening periods and conditions of visit (including by appointment);
- a written commitment to participate in national operations organized by the Ministry of Culture in the field of gardens (Rendez-vous aux jardins) and heritage (European Heritage Days).
The files are then examined by a working group chaired by the regional prefect or his representative. The gardens selected are the subject of a decision of the regional prefect. The criteria for awarding the label, the conditions for refusing or withdrawing the label and the checks carried out by the departments of the Ministry are specified in the 2023 circular.
What are the benefits of the «Remarkable Garden» label?
The label has the following advantages:
- Mention in communication documents issued by the Ministry of Culture;
- Possibility of obtaining specific road signs bearing the logo, according to the same process as the buildings protected as historic monuments;
- Authorization to use the label and its logo on all communication and signage documents;
- Possibility of taking into account in the definition of local urban plans (PLU)
Attention: Since 1 January 2014, the label no longer allows to obtain tax approval.
How to apply?
The owners must send the applications to the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC) either:
- Online: by filing your application on Simplified Procedures
- By post : by sending a request to your DRAC.
There is no application deadline. Applications are open year-round.
