Michael Cacoyannis died in Athens, in the country of «Zorba the Greek», the film he made at the 3 Oscars in 1964. Who else but this magnificent Cypriot – Greek filmmaker could have worn such a fresco, played by characters of fire such as Antony Quinn, Irene Papas or Lila Kedrova?
How can we forget the scene where Zorba the Greek dances to the music of Mikis Theodorakis, one of the most famous Greek composers?
Heir and ardent continuator of Greek mythology, Cacoyakis made a beautiful trilogy of tragedies for cinema, which revealed the great actress Irene Papas. His film «Electre», in particular, received the prize for best cinematic transposition in 1962.
But it was the theatre that he had turned to in recent years, as if to return irresistibly to the cradle of all the arts.
I express my sorrowful sympathy to his family, to the members of his cultural foundation, and to all his compatriots, of whom he was one of the dearest heralds.
