European Union and heritage
In the Lisbon Treaty, Article 3.3, “the Union must ensure the safeguarding and development of Europe’s cultural heritage”. In recent years, heritage has attracted increasing interest from the institutions of the European Union: European Commission, European Parliament, European Committee of the Regions, because it contributes to European objectives: growth, job creation (the heritage sector represents an important part of the cultural and tourism industries), sustainable development, attractiveness of territories and social cohesion (quality of life of European citizens, skills training, European excellence, etc.). Finally, heritage has ripple effects on other economic sectors.
The European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 has helped to stimulate a dynamic in favour of heritage in the European institutions and in the political sectors concerned.
