On this occasion, his greatest masterpiece, the trompe l'oeil decor of the stairwell of the Hôtel de Châteaurenard d'Aix-en-Provence (1654), was restored.
Jean Daret, painter of the King in Provence
Through a hundred works from churches, private collectors and major museum institutions, the Granet Museum retraces the artistic path of Jean Daret mixed with different influences from Flemish art to Caravaggio. After an apprenticeship with the Flemish painter Antoine van Opstal (1592-1653), he moved to Aix where he quickly managed to obtain prestigious commissions from the Aix high society and the clergy. The exhibition will also make it possible to appreciate Daret’s talent as a draughtsman thanks to the very recent acquisition in public sale of a collection of drawings.
An exhibition in two stages
In addition to the exhibition, the curators have imagined a journey «outside the walls» through a mobile application; thus, the visitor can extend his visit, and this, in an original way, in the different churches of the PACA region, thus allowing a real development of heritage at the regional level.
An ambitious restoration campaign with the support of the DRAC and the CICRP
A major programme of restoration of Daret’s works, particularly paintings from religious buildings, has been carried out over several years. It mobilized both the scientific teams of the project, the experienced restorers, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Heritage Conservation and Restoration (CICRP) and the Historical Monuments Service of the DRAC PACA. This pooling of skills made it possible to shed light on the singularity of this painter and to better understand his technique.
