Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a staple of media and information literacy. It also opens up great possibilities for the transmission of knowledge in all its forms. As part of the Spring of Critical Thinking, the 2024 edition of Digital Culture Meetings, an initiative of the General Delegation for Transmission, Territories and Cultural Democracy to the Ministry of Culture, returned on several players in the sector that have seized AI to launch acculturation actions.
Restoring historical depth to AI
In Toulouse, the Quai des Savoirs, a cultural centre that is interested in science and society, welcomes until November 3 “Double I”. This exhibition, which offers a very complete presentation of AI, looks back at an unknown dimension: its history. “ We wanted to give historical depth to AI, a term that dates back to...the 1950s. It seemed important to us to reposition it in its context to understand its stakes, to appropriate the springs of this technology, and to show that what is happening today is not totally new "explains Laurent Chicoineau, Director of the Quai des savoirs. A presentation that challenges many preconceived ideas.
«Double I» is also an exploration of AI seen through the prism of artistic installations. And here too, the artists' gaze brings a shift, a step aside, sometimes disruptive, often relevant, always interesting as Google Maps Hacks, an installation by artist Simon Weckert consisting of a wagon containing 99 smartphones carried by an individual in the streets of Berlin. This concentration of phones will thus deceive the algorithms of Google Maps which will interpret it as a giant traffic jam. The tool believes that streets are impassable when they are completely empty…“ These facilities are there to entertain, question and wonder about the dangers, limitations and hopes of AI "continues the director."
Finally, a playful aspect completes the exhibition: games, quizzes, podcasts, an «AI and cinema» cycle with the Cinémathèque de Toulouse and even… a «Court of AI» set up with the Toulouse Bar in which judges, prosecutors, lawyers, experts and witnesses succeed each other to argue and debate, accuse and defend artificial intelligence for a playful link with the law.
AI, extension of possibilities for people with disabilities
In Poitiers, the Mendès-France space, which has existed for more than forty years, has set itself the task of closely monitoring technological developments in the digital field. So it’s hard to miss out on AI. “ We have set up workshops to start on ChatGPT or create its website using AI. There is a real demand for AI, says Patrick Treguer, head of the Mendès-France space. And we have observed that this demand does not come only from the youngest, quite the opposite: seniors are also particularly interested in this subject. We are dealing with a true cross-generational phenomenon. »
A phenomenon that affects all ages, but also specific audiences, such as people with disabilities. For this, the Mendès-France space has partnered with the Laborit hospital in Poitiers and two of its structures: the psychosocial rehabilitation house, which welcomes young people from 18 to 35 years with worrying psychic symptoms, and the Mosaic residence in the Charentes for adults with multiple disabilities. In particular, it offers them a digital lutherie designed to create musical instruments using the potential of digital adapted to the cognitive abilities of the participants. « The objective is to promote the expression of people in fragile situations. Having a musical, audiovisual and graphic expression are triggers to go further ” says Treguer.
Experimenting with AI
The association Fréquence Écoles, based in Lyon, has led several projects, whose common denominator is to experiment with AI. First, a poster campaign whose design was created by artificial intelligence. An exercise whose track record has been mixed. “ First, because we had to use several AIs, and this technology did not really save us time. Finally, the result was far from what we would have obtained if we had worked with a human ” summarizes Dorie Bruyas, Director of Fréquence Écoles. These lessons allowed to start a second phase of experimentation last year with workshops focused on professionals.
Another project: the association offers free adapted activities on Datalireladata, a platform to teach young people to be actors and actors in the world of data, launched by Fréquence écoles as part of the Ministry of Culture’s call for projects «Media and information education actions» in 2021. « The world is changing with a precarious public weakened by the digital transformation. Digital skills development is a response to a social and equality emergency in our country ” says Dorie Bruyas.
AI, a model for education
In the field of education, Class'Code, based in Nantes, offers to produce free resources thanks to a network of structures that makes work together very different audiences such as philosophers or school educators. AI is obviously one of the topics addressed by the association, which intervenes in schools especially with the Intrepids de la tech. Specific sequences dedicated to AI for girls complete these information sessions. As an extension of these actions, the Unesco RELIA Chair intervenes, still in Nantes, on education and artificial intelligence with both national and European projects that combine open educational resources and artificial intelligence. « AI has a strong impact on these resources and we need to identify them. There are over 500,000 AI models, some of which meet very specific ambitions ” notes Bastien Masse, Director-General of Class’Code and Head of the RELIA Unesco Chair project.
Still in the field of knowledge transmission, the association Savoir Devenir, which works in the field of media and information education, provides «Disinoxez-vous», a series of four online courses to understand and fight infox. In addition, the association has developed a synthesis and proposals of educational devices around AI. ' It’s like a butterfly with four wings, summarizes Divina Frau Meigs, president of Savoir Devenir. Skills, knowledge, skills and values for decision making, democratic. Without one of these four wings, the butterfly cannot fly. »
