Documentary processing
Document processing and digitisation are inseparable. The inventory, cataloguing and fine indexing of photographs (which does not mean to enter in a description of all the elements of the image), are an indispensable prerequisite for their valorization. The quality of documentary processing is essential to the exploitation and exploitation of a photographic collection.
How to fill in the photographs?
Regardless of the software or document processing system adopted by each institution, it is important to give the most accurate information about the objects preserved.
The valuation of a photograph or a fund depends on the optimization of the documentary processing.
Two types of information must be planned and broken down into different fields:
- Information concerning the object presented and its legal status: inventory number, author, date of shooting/drawing, dimensions, type of presentation of the object, nature of techniques, identification of processes, legal status, credit;
- Information about the content of the image: title, legend, description, related works, etc.
It will be possible to establish links between different items such as a negative and one or more prints kept in the collection, to reconcile a print or a negative with its publication, a negative of a contact sheet.
A reference to items kept by different collections (for example several prints of the same negative) can also be considered.
