Apply for the Intangible Heritage of Humanity
As a State party to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the ICP, France may submit to UNESCO nominations to inscribe some of its elements on the ICP lists of humanity. Applications must be submitted to the Ministry of Culture.
The Way Forward
Before any application for registration with UNESCO, the practices must be included in the National Inventory of the CIP of France by the Ministry of Culture (DIRI).
Applications for consideration for registration on one of the two lists (Urgent Safeguard List, Representative List) or on the Register of Best Practices must be sent to DIRI in hard copy and in electronic format, by completing the current UNESCO application forms (available here).
The candidate dossiers are examined by the Committee on Ethnological and Intangible Heritage (CPEI), which decides, depending on the progress of the project, whether to send the dossiers to UNESCO or to request additional information. The CPEI may also, if necessary, hear the project promoters.

UNESCO’s CIP emblem
The PCI logo (logo) of Unesco comes under specific conditions of use.
Communicating through the UNESCO CIP emblem
The inscription on the UNESCO CIP lists does not give the right to automatic use of the logo "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Unesco". But the holders concerned can state this in writing. Its use, known as "patronage", is subject to prior authorization by UNESCO, on the advice of the Ministry of Culture and the French National Commission for UNESCO.
The Centre français du PCI is kept informed of the authorizations granted. The emblem can only be used in its form associated with the UNESCO logo (Temple on the left/ PCI emblem on the right). It is not attached to any element in its own right and is never granted for lasting purposes but only for specific and ad hoc activities.
Steps to follow
1. Creation of the sponsorship application file (4 months before the planned activity).
- Ensure that the request for the use of the emblem will only cover events, events or works precisely located in time and space, in relation to the defence of the ICP as defined by UNESCO.
- Ensure that the planned activity is financially and technically feasible and that the communication plan explicitly specifies the intended uses of the emblem.
- Download and complete the UNESCO Patronage Application Form (available here), with the necessary supporting documents.
2. Consultation with the Ministry of Culture and CNFU.
Once the file has been created, send it, in paper or electronic format, with an introductory letter to:

To limit the undue circulation of image files and prevent their reuse without prior authorization, the National Commission will request that the application for the grant of the Unesco emblem be accompanied by a written commitment from the applicants not to disseminate these files beyond the specific circumstances of the grant or the uses for which it was then authorized.
3. Transmission of the request to UNESCO.
In case of positive response You will be informed of the transmission of your application file to the Director-General of UNESCO (Secretariat responsible for the use of the ICP emblem).
In case of negative response, you will also be informed by either of these authorities.
4. UNESCO’s response.
If the Ministry and CNFU have supported your request and have forwarded your request, UNESCO will process it within 3 months and inform you of their final decision in writing.
In case of agreement, the responsible body receives an official letter from the UNESCO Secretariat setting out the general conditions for the use of the emblem of the 2003 Convention.
Any refusal results in a reasoned letter from the UNESCO Secretariat. The Ministry and CNFU will be kept informed of UNESCO’s decision.
5. Obtaining electronic files of the 2003 Convention emblem.
In case of agreement, the responsible body contacts ICH-emblem to obtain the appropriate electronic file. This file is not intended to circulate or be reused without prior authorization.
6. Consultation with CNFU in the development of communication templates.
Project leaders are invited to consult the CNFU (alexandre.navarro@diplomatie.gouv.fr) during the preparation of the communication models in which the emblem is to be displayed. It will be able to assure the designers and project leaders of the correct use of the emblem and compliance with graphic standards.
7. Report to UNESCO.
The objective of granting the use of the 2003 Convention emblem for patronage purposes is to increase the awareness and impact of the Convention.
Once the activity is completed, the responsible body sends a report to UNESCO (form available here) to assess the visibility, scope and impact achieved by the patronage beneficiary activity.
Accompanied by examples of materials and documents produced bearing the emblem, the report should be sent by post or electronically to:
- ICH-emblem@unesco.org
- UNESCO / Intangible Cultural Heritage Section / 1 rue Miollis / 75732 Paris cedex 15
with a copy to Lily Martinet and Alexandre Navarro.
