Cinema, a gateway to the media library
Implementation of a human accessibility system for people with complex disabilities: autism, multiple disabilities, mental disabilities, mental disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease
QUOI ?
Making Film Sessions Available in the Media Library Auditorium: Inclusive Sessions Relax where everyone can express their emotions in their own way.
POUR WHO ?
For people with complex disabilities: autism, multiple disabilities, mental disabilities, mental disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, who rarely go to a media library. The atypical behaviours that can result from these disabilities stand out in a place where silence is the norm. Families as medico-social professionals dare little to go there.
PBEAR ?
To facilitate the access of this public to the media library by gradually familiarizing it, and reassure people with disabilities and their entourage, such as the usual public and professionals of the media library.
The possibility to attend a cinema session offering a suitable reception is a first step towards access to other proposals: loan of books in Easy to Read, albums, CD, DVD, time of the tale, listening to music, etc.
COMMENT ?
By offering a reception adapted to certain screenings in order to allow their sharing convi-vial. This adaptation is essentially based on a clear reception and information of the public - with and without disability - and on a reception provided by a trained team.
Cinema-ma difference, is a resource structure specialized in human accessibility essential to make cultural places accessible to people with complex disabilities.
She accompanies the media library team throughout the set-up and monitoring of the project, provides training for staff and volunteers, and provides tools. The partnership between the media library and Ciné-ma difference is formalized by a convention.
A. PRE-PROJECT
The project must have the explicit support of the management and be fully integrated into the cultural offer of the media library.
The media library must have an auditorium offering screening conditions close to a cinema.
The project must be that of a plural and transversal team. All services and personnel directly and indirectly involved in the project should be identified and provided with clear information.
To set up the project in the best conditions, it will be necessary to devote the necessary time to this information phase so that everyone understands how inclusion is not only relevant but also rewarding for the media library and its staff.
B. SETTING UP THE PROJECT
1. Audit of media library spaces
Locate access from public transport and car parks.
Locate the auditorium and circulations from the entrance.
Identify comfort zones, difficulties and potential pitfalls depending on each type of disability, routes to and from emergency exits, spaces reserved for RMCs, access to washrooms - including access to RMCs, etc.
Provide for specific placement of the host team before, during and after the screening.
> Realization of a host team placement plan
2. Programming
Define the frequency of sessions: regularity is essential for the success of the system.
Stop the day and hour in the weekend - necessary for families - with a schedule adapted to the constraints of the public in a situation of disability.
Offer films adapted to this audience: reasonable duration, VF and, if possible, audio-description, VFSTF.
NB: Alternate between films for young audiences and films for all audiences to satisfy a varied age group.
> Realization of a season-long programming plan
Ensure that the contract with the distributor for the public use of DVDs covers the rights of distribution and internal and external communication: otherwise, no communication on the film would be possible outside the media library.
3. Preparation of technical arrangements
Explain to Governance staff the need for accommodations for this session:
- Gradually dark out
- Adjust sound volume
- Screen the very short pre-session film.
Allow time for necessary engineering tests.
4. Preparing for Public Welcome
To welcome people with complex disabilities and to inform the public without disabilities, the presence of a large reception team, clearly identified throughout the course, is absolutely necessary. It is coordinated by the project authority.
The number of staff available on weekends is insufficient: volunteers will be needed. Ciné-ma différence helps with recruitment: advice, recruitment guide, ad templates, etc.
Professionals directly concerned by the reception of the public and volunteers will receive training: knowledge of disabilities, attitude to adopt, way of informing the public, FAQ...
NB: The presence of trained volunteers does not exempt the awareness of all staff.
> Planning a training session
Clearly define and clarify the role of volunteers versus institutional staff. A prior visit to the media library and auditorium is essential for all volunteers.
5. Preparing Public Information
Tools provided by Cine-ma difference or made with its help:
- FALC guide with photos of locations and responders
- Posters
- Generic explanatory leaflets for the whole public
- Yellow vests to identify persons responsible for the appropriate reception
- Brief pre-meeting speech
- Very short pre-session film.
In order to overcome resistance and ensure that people with disabilities dare to go to these projections, an important information work must be carried out before the first session and then continued: with the families concerned, relays in associations, medico-social institutions, socio-cultural places, etc.
Broadcast a public awareness spot during the usual screenings and on the screens of the lobby, if any.
Announce and explain the sessions on the media of the media library and the City, in the local press, through associations and relay structures, etc.
> Development of a communication plan
To see: Implementation of reciprocal communication strategies between cultural structures with the same accessibility approach.
7. Booking
Booking is not a priori necessary for families - to be seen according to the size of the auditorium and the usual number of spectators at the sessions.
On the other hand, to ensure the best possible reception, it is essential:
- For wheelchair users
- For groups
> Realization of a booking procedure (PMK and groups)
C. LPROJECTION
1. Before the screening
The teams Contact and confirm attendance of planned volunteers and staff. Make/regain contact with the Control Officer, Security Officer and other officers who provide guidance to the regular public. Make himself available for questions. In addition to the session leader, if possible, schedule a different agent for each session to gradually train all staff.
Accompanying the public The reception of the spectators takes place without interruption, according to the placement plan of the reception team, from the entrance of the media library to the armchair in the auditorium.
Public information It is delivered in 3 phases: - Individual information given to each spectator before entering the auditorium - Brief speech of the session manager before the screening - Very short film before the beginning of the film.
2. During the projection
The black is done gradually.
The sound volume is much lower than a typical projection. It can be adjusted during the session according to the needs and feelings of the audience.
The reception team is spread throughout the room so that they can anticipate and respond to any needs - such as getting up, moving around, leaving the room.
She is available to help all spectators, and to surround, reassure and support people with disabilities and their companions.
The public is accompanied to the exit of the media library. The reception team (employees and volunteers) exchange on the course of the session, the audience present, the successes/ difficulties of this adapted screening. A brief report is prepared by the session manager, via the form on the Ciné-ma différence website.
> Writing a report of the projection
