National Drama Centre Label
Created in 1972, the label «Centre dramatique national» (CDN) concerns structures for the promotion of theatre and its renewal. It is awarded by the Ministry of Culture and the Director of the labeled structure after the conclusion of a contract of dramatic decentralization.
The label «Centre dramatique national» can be awarded to creative and production structures directed by one or more artists engaged in the theatre field. To date, 38 national drama centres throughout the country have received the label “National Drama Centre”.

What is the National Drama Centre (CDN) label?
The label «Centre dramatique national» was established by the Decree of 2 October 1972, then revised by a order of 23 February 1995, theOrder of 5 May 2017 setting out the terms of reference for the "National Drama Centre" label and the standard contract for dramatic decentralization.
Directed by one or more artists directly concerned by dramatic art, the CDN are structures in favor of the influence of the theatre, as well as the renewal of its forms and its aesthetics.
The missions entrusted to the National Drama Centre are of public interest. Thus, the labeled structures are guarantors of the dramatic creation, within the framework of a national policy of development of the theatre art.
What are the procedures for awarding the «National Drama Centre» label?
The structures aiming to be labeled «National Drama Centre» must commit to different specific criteria to obtain this label:
- The creation;
- Dissemination;
- The artistic requirement;
- The territorial anchorage;
- The development of audiences.
How to apply?
The CDN Label Application Package includes:
- A descriptive document reflecting the artistic ambition of the structure and the missions it develops;
- A document describing its legal status, the characteristics of the equipment and staff it has, its budgetary situation and the financing available to it to guarantee its economic sustainability;
- A document describing the inscription of the structure in its territorial, artistic and cultural environment and within professional networks;
- The decision of the competent body of the structure validating the application for the award of the label.
For each «National Drama Centre», a contract of dramatic decentralization is concluded between the Minister of Culture and the director of the labeled structure. This contract is valid for a period of four years and may be extended twice per three-year period, depending on theOrder of 5 May 2017 (Art. 3).
