Label «National opera in the region»
Created in 1996, the label «Opéra national en région» concerns operas in France outside Ile-de-France. It is attributed to structures working for the development of lyrical, musical and choreographic life on a national scale. The objective of this label is to harmonize lyrical policy on the national territory.

What is the label «Opéra national en région»?
The label «Opéra national en région» has been in existence since 1996. Six operas have been certified over the years, distinguishing themselves from the network of thirteen operas in the regions, notably because of the internal artistic teams they have (ballet, choir, orchestra) to develop their national and international influence through co-production:
- the Lyon National Opera
- the National Rhine Opera in Strasbourg
- the Bordeaux National Opera
- 'Opéra national de Montpellier'
- the National Opera of Lorraine in Nancy
- the National Opera Capitole Toulouse
This labelling concerns national and international reference structures. The condition is that they carry a project in favor of lyric art. This project must be of general interest in terms of creation, production and dissemination.
The labelled operas undertake to respect a specification. It is defined in a contract signed for five years between the State and the local authorities responsible for the structure.
The name opera theatre of national interest
Four operas also benefit from the name «opera theatre of national interest» which aims to promote structures whose artistic and cultural programme of action is of general interest for creation, the renewal the valorization and the democratization of this repertoire and its forms:
- the Lille Opera
- l'Opéra de Rouen/Normandie
- the Opera de Tours
- the Dijon Opera
What are the procedures for awarding the «Opéra national en région» label?
Structures wishing to obtain the label “Opéra national en région” must respect several objectives:
- artistic, to ensure the quality and programming of works;
- professional, to ensure the maintenance of permanent troops and promote the insertion of young artists;
- territorial, to offer representation in the regions;
- social, to raise awareness among new audiences.
The label concerns operas with various legal statutes: associations, municipal boards or intercommunal union.
What are the advantages of the «Opéra national en région» label?
The label “National Opera in the Region” allows the labelled structures to benefit from subsidies from the State and the Regional Council.
How to apply?
To apply for the "Opéra national en région" label, the structures must submit a dossier including:
- a descriptive document of the structure reflecting its artistic ambition and the missions it develops;
- a document describing its legal status, the characteristics of the equipment and staff it has, its budgetary position and the financing available to it to ensure its economic sustainability;
- a document describing the inscription of the structure in its territorial, artistic and cultural environment and within professional networks;
- the decision of the competent body of the structure applying for the award of a label.
