The «Cultural Meeting Centre» label is awarded to historical monuments that have lost their original vocation. These structures must thus take part in a new cultural, artistic or intellectual life to apply for the designation.

What is the “Cultural Meeting Centre” label?
The Cultural Meeting Centre label was created in 1972. This appellation makes it possible to highlight the historical monuments that have lost their original vocation and are being renewed on the cultural, artistic and intellectual levels. Labeled structures must engage through a cultural project of general interest.
The label was awarded by the Ministry of Culture until 2020 and is now managed by the regional prefect.
What are the procedures for awarding the «Cultural Meeting Centre» label?
The “Cultural Meeting Centre” label may be awarded to any legal person under public or private non-profit law who fulfils the following conditions:
- enjoy autonomy in management, organization and decision-making;
- permanently occupy a heritage site open to the public year-round and contribute to its maintenance or restoration;
- implement on this site a cultural project of general interest, which will be assessed in particular with regard to the following purposes and means:
- develop, within the heritage site, interdisciplinary actions between the field of heritage and that of artistic creation;
- supporting emerging artistic forms and practices and professional beginning artists (hosting artists, researchers, creators or architects);
- enable the transmission of knowledge and artistic experience to audiences;
- participate in the development of innovative forms of cultural and territorial tourism;
- be conducted under the responsibility of a single qualified project director; - have own resources for the implementation of the cultural project;
- receive financial or material support from one or more local authorities.
How to apply?
The structures to be labelled as “Cultural Meeting Centres” must be an application file. Within two months of receipt of the complete dossier, the regional prefect gives an opinion on the application. The applicant shall be notified of the final decision not later than 10 months after receipt of the complete dossier.
