Cistercian architecture of the early XIIIe century
The building is part of the architectural and spiritual filiation of the convers wing of the abbey of Clairvaux and that of Cîteaux, now demolished, of which Longuay is the daughter and the little girl. It is an important milestone in Cistercian monastic architecture.
The whole is homogeneous and offers a medieval building whose interest goes beyond the framework of the Grand Est region and is understood in the influence of the European Cistercian order in the Middle Ages.
Reasons that motivated the desire to historic monument classification by the National Historic Monuments Board on December 12, 2018.
The building joins the 1,473 listed monuments in the Great East. List of listed buildings in the Grand Est.
To note, the DRAC Grand Est granted, in 2019, a grant of € 18,655 (up to 60% of the subsidy) for the support of the preliminary study for the restoration of the roofs of the castle (old abbey buildings) and the dovecote, listed as historic monuments.
Historical
Built in the Aube valley, on the borders of Burgundy and Champagne, the abbey became a Cistercian and the 58th daughter of Clairvaux, in the middle of the XIIe century, the date of foundation remains controversial: 1149 or 1150.
Before this date, it had been successively a hospice on the road between Langres and Sens, then a house of regular canons in 1136.
The entry into the order of Cîteaux will provoke numerous donations from the dukes of Burgundy, the counts of Champagne and the lords of the surroundings that will make it possible to constitute an important heritage in the second half of the XIIe century; a first campaign of construction, which is probably the consequence, will see the construction of the church and the dormitory of the monks from 1153.
The whole will be taken over and enlarged at the end of the XIIe century and in the following decades. From this period, remain the south wing of the cloister and part of the east wing as well as the building of the convers brothers.
After the revolutionary sale of 1791, the old monastic buildings were gradually demolished. The façade of the south wing is transformed into a neo-xvi castlee and XVIIe by its owners, the Planta de Wildenberg, after 1870. They will create an eclectic decor inside. One notices, in the park, a dovecote and the old entrance gate of the abbey in the XVIIIe and a hunting lodge.
