Device overview
What is the title "Master of art" and the device "Master of art - Pupils"?
Launched in 1994 by the Ministry of Culture, the title Maître d'art and the "Maîtres d'art – Élèves" transmission system refers to the programmes of living human treasures of intangible cultural heritage, as defined by UNESCO several decades ago: perpetuation of rare and remarkable know-how, over a period of several years, from an artisan recognized by his peers to a student in development.
The title of Master of Art is awarded for life by the Ministry of Culture, in order to transmit rare and remarkable know-how to a student. It distinguishes women and men of passion for the uniqueness of their know-how, their exceptional career and their involvement in the arts and crafts renewal. Since the creation of the title, 149 professionals have been appointed in more than 105 different specialties, both in the field of artistic creation and heritage preservation.
More than a recognition, the title of Master of Art is the commitment symbol. Once appointed, each Master of Art has the duty to pass on his or her expertise to the Student with whom he or she has been selected. For three years, his workshop became the privileged place of transmission. Since 2012, he has been supported by the Institut National des Métiers d'Art (INMA). At the same time support program, professional springboard, network of excellence and unique initiative in Europe, it contributes every day to the perpetuation of know-how.
