National theatres
The Comédie-Française, the Théâtre national de l'Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe, the Théâtre national de la Colline and the Théâtre national de Strasbourg are, together with the Théâtre national de Chaillot and the Théâtre national de l'Opéra Comique, the six national theatres. Pillars of public policy in favour of drama, dance for Chaillot and opera for L'Opéra comique, these large emblematic scenes of the French performing arts are public institutions under the tutelage of the Ministry of Culture (Directorate-General for Artistic Creation).
La Comédie-Française Its mission is to represent the pieces of its repertoire and ensure their national and international influence. It ensures the continuity of a troupe of actors that includes members, gathered in the society of French actors, and residents. The repertoire of the Comédie-Française consists of French and foreign plays, both ancient and contemporary, which are received by the reading committee. The shows are presented alternately in the historic Richelieu Hall. The Comédie-Française also has two other scenes of performance in Paris: the Théâtre du Vieux Colombier (6th arrondissement de Paris) and the Studio-Théâtre (Carrousel du Louvre). Eric Ruf has been its general manager since August 4, 2014.
The National Theatre of the Odeon – Theatre of Europe Its mission is to develop theatrical creation by presenting to the public the widest and most diverse works belonging to the classical and contemporary repertoire, French or foreign. It works specifically for the support and dissemination of European theatre. It has permanently two stages: Odeon Hall (6th district of Paris) and the Berthier workshops (17th arrondissement de Paris). Stéphane Braunschweig has been the director since January 13, 2016.
National Theatre of the Hill (20th arrondissement de Paris) aims to develop theatrical creation by presenting works belonging to the classical and contemporary repertoire, French or foreign. He works to develop the representation of contemporary writings. Wajdi Mouawad has been the director since April 6, 2016.
The National Theatre of Strasbourg Its mission is to present theatrical works but also to train in the performing arts within its École supérieure d'art dramatique (ESAD). The only national theatre in the region, it occupies a unique place in the landscape of live entertainment. Stanislas Nordey has been director since 26 September 2014.
