This business note published by the Department of Studies, Foresight, Statistics and Documentation (DEPS) measures economic activity of the cultural market field in the fourth quarter of 2022 and for the whole of 2022, based on the turnover reported by enterprises to the Directorate-General for Public Finance.
Revenue in the market cultural sectors grew by 1.3 billion euros over one year in the fourth quarter of 2022
The commercial field of culture year-on-year growth of 1.3 billion euros, up 5% from the fourth quarter of 2021 and 10% from the pre-crisis 2019 (+ EUR 2.3 billion).
- The live commercial performance, visual arts, heritage management and film screening are the cultural sectors that grew strongly in the final quarter of 2022 compared to the same quarter of 2021.
- The other cultural sectors show less or stable growth in turnover.
- Only the video game and radio are experiencing a year-over-year decline in revenues (-13% and -8% respectively).
Revenue in the market cultural sectors grew by €11 billion for the whole of 2022
For the entire year 2022, the annual turnover of the market cultural sectors grew by €11 billion compared to 2021 (+14%) . All cultural sectors – except the pound which remains stable – are progressing between 2021 and 2022, particularly activities related to cultural outings (film screening, live commercial performance and heritage management).
In 2022, the revenues from the cultural field exceed by 8% their 2019 value (+ 6.8 billion euros) :
- Drawn in particular by the growth in visual arts and audiovisual and film (excluding radio, video games and film projection).
- The film screening and the press are the only two sectors with an annual turnover below its 2019 value in 2022.
