Regional Contemporary Art Funds
Created in 1982 at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, on the basis of a State-Regions partnership, the FRAC (Regional Funds for Contemporary Art) are an original and essential tool to support creation, cultural planning of the territory and public awareness, notably by the mobility of collections that characterizes them. The distribution of works, their circulation through exhibitions, their visibility through publications contribute to the dissemination and export of French culture.

Since 2017 the FRAC benefit from a label of the Ministry of Culture that crowns years of artistic and professional commitment in the service of the general interest. It is both recognition, protection and a sign of trust. This label secures the collections and dedicates the missions of the FRAC in terms of support for contemporary creation, transmission and mediation for the real access of all to contemporary art.
For nearly forty years the FRAC have created a high quality contemporary heritage in every region of France.Their collections are the most shown in France.
The FRAC plays an essential role in supporting creation by being often the first buyers of young artists. They are constantly inventing new mechanisms for the mediation of contemporary art for all audiences. The more than 600 exhibitions they organize each year throughout the country are a decisive factor in cultural democratization.
The FRAC play a structuring role in the organization and dynamics of cultural decentralization. As stressed by Vitalie Taittinger, President of FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, President of Platform, “Today, with this positioning, the FRAC exchange with all the actors of contemporary art to defend emerging creation, in France and across borders, in order to preserve the differences of views and points of view.”
Within these 23 FRAC, as many different orientations and perspectives on contemporary art are expressed through the acquisition policies defined by each director within the framework of the artistic and cultural project he carries. To support him in the definition of this policy and the choice of works, he is surrounded by a technical committee of acquisition whose volunteer French or foreign members are art critics, museum curators, directors of art centers, curators, artists, personalities or private collectors. This is how each French Region has one or more remarkable contemporary art collections, which contribute to its national and international influence
Today, the FRAC collections include more than 35,000 works by 6,000 artists of all nationalities. In 2018, the FRAC organized 667 exhibitions and 3,559 artistic and cultural education activities in the most diverse places, in cooperation with the most varied private or public institutions. They welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors throughout France.
Some FRAC have specialized their collection as the FRAC Centre in architecture (models of architects and works of contemporary artists related to architecture) or the FRAC Picardie, in drawing. Unlike museums or art centres, the FRAC cannot be identified with a single exhibition space. Essentially nomadic heritage and original dissemination and educational tools, the FRAC collections travel in France and abroad. They are at the centre of a network of many diversified and loyal partners over the years: fine arts museums, art centres or municipal spaces, art schools, schools or universities, historical monuments or parks, galleries, neighbourhood associations and sometimes hospitals, etc.
This principle of mobility of FRAC collections in places not dedicated to culture defines them as essential actors of a policy of cultural planning of the territory aimed at reducing geographical disparities, to facilitate the discovery of contemporary art by the widest possible audience.
PLATFORM
The FRAC are grouped within the association PLATFORM which aims to constitute a resource center and information on their activity, to promote their specificity, strengthen their collegiality, disseminate their collections through interregional and international projects and thus increase their visibility. PLATFORM initiatives are part of the will of the Ministry of Culture in partnership with local authorities to intensify inter-local circulationregional, cross-border and international works and exhibitions of the FRAC and constitute a real network of exchanges and dissemination of contemporary art.
