Retain cellulose nitrate media
Working group "Preserving cellulose nitrate media" meeting since November 2014 under the aegis of the Mission of Photography of the Ministry of Culture.
Since November 2014, under the aegis of the Mission of Photography of the Ministry of Culture a working group brought together professionals faced with the preservation and processing of photographic and cinematographic media in cellulose nitrate, the first artificial polymer used in the manufacture of photographic media from 1875, then cinematographic.
Of all the preserved media, cellulose nitrate media are the ones that generate the most apprehension and fear among professionals.
To take stock of these issues, to exchange on professional practices, to deepen and enrich knowledge, to inform and debate on the actuality of research, scientists, professionals of preventive conservation, archivists and managers of film and photographic collections faced with this problem have gathered within the working group Storing nitrate media cellulose.
Their main objective is to answer the questions posed by the conservation of this type of support, to propose solutions and to design tools for monitoring and controlling collections, adapted to their nature and volume.
Together, they developed a collection of fact sheets for the staff responsible for implementing the conservation and management of such sets. These cards can be consulted on this page.
