The Philharmonie of Paris
With several concert halls, a museum, a media library and many educational spaces, the Philharmonie de Paris is a unique project.
The name «Philharmonie de Paris» includes the musical activities that take place in two separate buildings:
- The Cité de la musique (Philharmonie 2), designed by architect Christian de Portzamparc and inaugurated in 1995, includes two concert halls (900 and 250 seats), a Music Museum and a Media Library;
- The Philharmonie 1, designed by architect Jean Nouvel and opened to the public in January 2015, includes a large concert hall (2,400 seats), several rehearsal rooms, educational spaces and temporary exhibitions.
The Philharmonie de Paris thus constitutes an exceptional architectural ensemble within the Parc de la Villette, while its resident training and innovative art project contribute to making it a unique cultural hub in the world that promotes the appropriation of music by audiences.
The establishment offers a powerful tool at the service of national and international symphony formations, which did not find in Paris an equivalent to the large modern concert halls of the international capitals. Beyond the classical repertoire, its programming is open to contemporary and world music, as well as dance.
The Philharmonie de Paris also benefits from twenty years of experience in pedagogy. Since its inauguration in 1995, the Cité de la musique has carried out activities aimed at everyone, ensuring a diversity of perspectives that integrate non-European cultures and popular forms. The new establishment continues while amplifying this policy of education and cultural democratization.
Armed with these riches, the Philharmonie de Paris has set itself the task of rethinking the place of the concert, integrating it at the heart of an open system, promoting all forms of educational or playful appropriation. Located in a developing East Paris, a link between the capital and its surroundings, it is a real gathering place for all audiences.
