Public establishment of the park and the great Halle de la Villette (EPPGHV)
Place of culture(s) as much as of nature(s), the public establishment of the park and the great Halle de la Villette (EPPGHV) is located in the north-east of Paris, in the 19th district. A lively place for dialogue between arts and society, the Parc de la Villette covers an area of 55 hectares where the Grande Halle and the Halle aux Cuirs rub shoulders with the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the Géode, the Zénith de Paris, the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, the Théâtre Paris Villette and the Cité de la Musique-Philharmonie de Paris.
In the early 1980s, the choice of architect Bernard Tschumi’s project for the creation of a vast field of artistic, cultural and scientific programming, going beyond the traditional model of the landscape park, allows a unique urban conversion of this site once occupied by the central slaughterhouses of Paris, around the conservation of an exceptional heritage of the 19th century as well as the construction of innovative and emblematic equipment of the 20th century, both in architectural terms and in their function of supporting societal developments.
The public establishment’s mission is to promote the creation and promotion of practices, new uses and new forms of expression. It develops artistic and cultural activities open to the city, intended to promote diversity, diversity and the meeting of the public through the sensitive and participatory experience, especially for children and young people, families and the most deprived groups.
While providing support to emerging companies through artist residencies, La Villette provides programming for the Grande Halle, Chapiteaux, Espace Little Villette, WIP Villette, Halle aux Cuirs, Folies (26 red buildings emblematic of the architect Bernard Tschumi’s project) as well as outdoor spaces, including 12 thematic gardens and meadows.
Contemporary creation is presented in all its forms (music, dance, theatre, circus, visual arts and cinema) and the Establishment enjoys a local reputation, national and international expertise in mediation and arts education, urban cultures (hip hop, slam, electronic music, digital arts, etc.) and proposals around popular arts in full renewal such as circus or street arts.
