A graphic arts studio in Sèvres
Since the founding of the Sèvres manufacture in 1756, a collection of graphic arts has been created and enriched by more than 250 years of creation. A portion of this collection - 17,000 drawings - was digitized from 2011 to 2015. Discover these wonders through the notices put online by the museum on Mona Lisa, the collective catalogue of collections of museums in France.

A history of porcelain decorative arts
A remarkable set of graphic arts
The Cité de la Céramique - Sèvres et Limoges preserves an exceptional heritage, rich in nearly 300,000 ceramics, since the meeting of the prestigious collections of the Musée national de céramique de Sèvres, the Adrien Dubouché National Museum in Limoges and the National Manufacture in Sèvres. But the establishment also has, what is less known, a remarkable collection of graphic arts that includes about 30,000 sheets, mainly drawings and prints, all linked to the production of the Manufacture since its creation in the 18th century.
A unique heritage accessible to all
This office, accessible by appointment to researchers, has been the subject of only a few presentations and publications; the study of this heritage ensemble was made possible on the occasion of the ambitious digitization program, led from 2011 to 2015, thanks to the patronage of the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation and the support of the Ministry of Culture and Communication with the national digitization plan. It consisted of a project to preserve and enhance a unique heritage, linked to the history of the institution. This fund, which covers more than 250 years of creation, is an exceptional and unique witness in Europe of the history of decorative arts in the field of porcelain that tells a great artistic adventure, constantly renewed.
250 years of creation
This set of leaves, preserved in Sèvres, brings together sketches and drawn models, intended to prepare the ornamentation of Sèvres porcelains, symbols of know-how, beauty, luxury and refinement in the French style, as shown by the shape projects of Duplessis or the abundant decorations ofHabert-Dys. In the 20th century, generous collectors made it possible to fill some gaps; this was the case, for example, for the drawing of Michel Seuphor’s vase. Several artists also responded to the call of director Serge Gauthier, by offering a print or a work on paper that analyzed the links between their work carried out in different techniques and materials. Since 2003, the publishing contracts signed with the invited artists stipulate the donation of the preparatory drawing or drawings to the work made in Sèvres porcelain.
Valuable testimonies
All these heritage documents, carefully archived and classified, are all the more important and valuable as they are often the only testimonies kept on site of the pieces produced, sold and then scattered or disappeared.
A campaign to digitize drawing collections
The challenge of the digitization campaign for drawings, generously given over, is to safeguard the entire national heritage, but also to enhance it through the enrichment of a site accessible to researchers, students and the general public.
A source of inspiration that spans the centuries
This includes decor projects, designed in very different forms either by the decorators on staff or by outside artists: oil on canvas, gouaches, watercoloursmodels, drawings, sheet prints, illustrated works. Most of these documents were intended specifically for the forms they would enrich, while others are ambivalent - the same drawing by François Boucher could serve as a model for a painted decoration and a statuette - or envisaged in other contexts.
This living heritage is primarily intended to serve the workshops of manufacture and decoration for the re-edition of pieces, as for the inspiration of new decorations. Many artists are invited to Sèvres - Cité de la céramique to find information and reflections that will allow them to create new pieces.
The production of Sèvres porcelain: one of the main missions of the manufacture
The missions of the Manufacture de Sèvres, founded in 1740 in Vincennes, are production according to artisanal porcelain art techniques that are editions of ancient models or contemporary creations. This production is intended for the needs of the State and for sale to the public. The Manufacture contributes to the safeguarding and development of manual ceramic trades, by organising the training of its staff and ensuring the transmission of its traditional techniques.
Between tradition and modernity
Even today, the Manufacture strives towards this balance between tradition and modernity, which in the 18th century seduced its contemporaries. It does so both through the maintenance of excellence that inspires admiration, through the sustainability of ancestral gestures but also through innovation. In each epoch, the know-how of the craftsmen, the imagination and talent of the artists who came to recharge their batteries at the Manufacture and who, together, contributed to give the establishment its identity. François Boucher, painter to the king, was the first guest artist in 1749, of a long list that continues today, to look at forms, colors or even decorations.
We can mention, among many others, the fruitful collaborations in the 20th and 21st centuries with Pierre Alechinsky, Alexander Calder, Serge Poliakoff, François Xavier Lalanne, Roberto Matta, Hans Arp, Johan Creten, Myriam Mechita, Fabrice Hyber ...
A consultation aid
With the digitization of the graphic arts collection, each image was associated with an identification record. These records were drawn up from the archives registers specifying for each drawing, the inventory number, the title, the author, the materials, the dating. Further work was carried out on the authors thanks to the electronic publication in 2003 of the List of all contributors to Sèvres by Tamara Préaud, honorary curator of the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres. It lists all the employees of the Manufacture with their function and the dates of their activity.
This information makes it possible to consult a corpus of more than 17,000 records by choosing one or more criteria (the name of an author, a century, a technique, a term in the title). To help users discover this unique graphic arts collection, this virtual exhibition offers thematic access, and lists of authors with a link to the works concerned.
