The training offer of the French Museum Service
For several years, the French Museum Service has been running or coordinating several training courses for museum professionals in France. On this page you can find out how these sessions are organised and what topics are covered.
The expertise of the French Museum Service as close as possible to the professionals
For several years, professionals from the French Museum Service (Collections Department and Museums Policy Department) have been providing advice to museums in France as part of ongoing training activities that they facilitate or coordinate.
These sessions are intended for scientific or administrative staff of museums in France, performing their functions in national or territorial museums, and sometimes more widely in the professional sphere of heritage.
The training themes cover various fields ranging from the history of collections to their multidisciplinary management on a daily basis.
Who organizes these trainings?
Whether they are held in Paris or in the region, or even overseas, these courses can be co-organised with the Directorate-General for Heritage and Architecture, the Regional Directorates for Cultural Affairs, training bodies under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture (National Heritage Institute), or through the National Centre of the Territorial Public Service. These last two institutions offer an annual online training catalogue.
It should be noted that the trainers of the French Museum Service often take part in extended professional days but also in initial training courses at the Ecole du Louvre, the Ecole des Chartes and the University.
Distance learning: renewed access
Since 2020, some workshops have been offered remotely. These may be half-day group sessions or a programme of individual courses over several weeks. This dematerialisation widens the geographical scope of potential participants. The distance is compensated by a direct dialogue during sessions, by messaging or via a personalized tutoring.
The face-to-face workshops continue in parallel in order to preserve the exchanges – particularly informal ones – that they promote between professionals from different horizons.
The office is attached to the Collections Department of the French Museum Service.
In order to ensure as close as possible to the professionals of the museums of France its missions of advice and expertise on the computerization, digitization and on-line presentation of collections, the office of dissemination has developed since 2012 an offer and a training experience, now recognized.
Pedagogy is guided by the objective of providing professionals with up-to-date knowledge and sustainable benchmarks. The discovery of online reference resources helps build a reflection in project mode without forgetting to be equipped and operational upon return to the museum.
The downloadable file below lists the themes covered by the office’s expertise.
If you would like to join one of the trainings organized by the office, contact your museum advisor in the regional direction of cultural affairs so that a session is organized in your region.
These trainings are complementary to the more specific support that the office delivers on a daily basis to each applicant museum.
