Following the tragic fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on 15 April 2019, It is necessary to ensure that these emblematic monuments of our heritage all have a satisfactory level of fire safety both in the field of protection of persons and in that of preservation of heritage, adapted to the activities and layout of the buildings.

To this end, the action plan «safety cathedrals» detailed below specifies the measures to be implemented by the various actors of the Ministry of Culture. It is based in particular on the initial feedback from the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and the lessons learned from the periodic five-year field visits by the successive security advisors in charge of this heritage, since January 1996.

This “cathedral safety” action plan was developed by the Mission for Security, Safety and Audit (MISSA) in 2019 and updated in 2020. It was completed based on the work of the working group set up in June 2021 within the Directorate-General for Heritage and Architecture in conjunction with all the actors in the regional cultural affairs directorates.

Its update was carried out in 2023 by including 11 new actions and completing 5 of them.
