The archives of parks and gardens
On a proposal from the former National Council of Parks and Gardens, the Interministerial Service of the Archives of France (SIAF), in partnership with the Fondation des parcs et jardins de France, conducted an investigation of the archives of the parks and gardens and their designers with a view to establishing an inventory of the archival holdings and then determining the funds threatened to protect them.
In the conviction that the gardens are the result of a complex process that comes into play not only the artistic culture of an era, but also the skills of technicians, analysis of the topography of the site, methods and tools for the cultivation of plants, Garden art historians have stressed the need to use new types of sources.
It then appeared necessary to establish a systematic inventory of the documentary collections preserved in the French archives (national, departmental, municipal, regional, community archives, regional cultural affairs directorates, architecture and heritage media library, French Institute of Architecture, Paris Police Prefecture, etc.). The identification of these archival documents represents an essential contribution to the development of research in the history of garden art.
This survey made it possible to produce a guide of sources for researchers.
Check the results on the European Archives Portal (APEX).
