The copyright exception for persons with disabilities
Le Code de la propriété intellectuelle prévoit une exception au droit d'auteur afin de favoriser l'accès aux œuvres pour les personnes en situation de handicap.
The exception to copyright for persons with disabilities allows non-profit organizations to produce and communicate to persons with disabilities adapted versions of protected works, without having to ask for prior authorization from the owners of neighbouring rights (authors, publishers, producers, performers, etc.) or to remunerate them. The adapted versions can be books in Braille, books with layout adapted for the needs of people with dyslexia or visual impairments, works in relief, videos in sign language, etc. Consultation of these adapted versions is strictly personal and reserved for the beneficiaries of the exception.
In order to improve the conditions for adaptation of printed works, Organizations approved for this purpose may obtain access to the digital files of works transmitted to them by publishers through a secure procedure on the Platon platform of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
