Promotion of French books abroad

Des devices public aid to the dissemination of the French book abroad have been set up based on professional bodies, mainly:

• the Bureau international of l’publishing french (EFB) is responsible for promoting French editorial production abroad through a presence in fairs, a study activity, market prospecting and training of foreign professionals. Through this promotional activity, the BIEF promotes the transfer of translation rights of French titles to foreign publishers.
• the Power plant of publishing manages, on behalf of the publishers-distributors, a system for grouping the transport of French books exported abroad (and in the DOM-TOM) and a global export insurance policy. The Centrale de l'édition manages, for the Ministry, aid to improve the cost of transport in order to lighten the burden on French-language booksellers abroad and the DOM. This assistance also makes it possible, through the “Programme Plus”, to make French-language academic and scientific works accessible to students in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa, Haiti, the Comoros and Madagascar through a system of price subsidies.

These measures are complemented by a support financial to French book acquisitions by bookshops located abroad (system managed by the CNL).

Moreover, a aid policy to the translating French titles in foreign languages is implemented by the CNL. Within this framework, special attention is paid to markets deemed “difficult” and to literary fields whose promotion abroad is most necessary (humanities and social sciences, theatre, literature for youth, etc.). 

Finally, the CNL also promotes translation of French works into foreign languages granting residence grants to foreign translators.
