Barometer of the most acquired and borrowed books in public reading libraries
What are the most purchased materials by public reading libraries? What are the most borrowed materials within these libraries? Can we compare library usage and book buying practices in bookstores?
After a preparatory mission entrusted in 2013 to Bruno Carbone, general curator of libraries, to study the feasibility of a documentary barometer, the Ministry of Culture and Communication (Directorate-General for Media and Cultural Industries, Book and Reading Services) launched at the end of 2014 the creation of such a tool. Two partnerships, one with C3rb Informatique and the other with BibLibre, were concluded for the transmission of data from a panel of libraries representative of the public library landscape. TMO-Regions was responsible for the collection and processing of statistical data.
A first survey was carried out in early 2015 on the 2014 purchases and loans data of the sample libraries. It is still only an experimental version, which has required the resolution of many difficulties in data collection and processing. The aim of the book and reading service is to offer a more complete and annualized version of this barometer.
