The cultural practice survey
Almost fifty years of observation of the behaviour of the French population in terms of cultural participation, from the early 1970s to the end of the 2010 decade.
Since the early 1970s, the Ministry of Culture has been conducting a regular survey Cultural practices which over time has become the main instrument for monitoring the behaviour of French people in the field of culture and media.
The 6e edition of this national survey was conducted in 2018after those conducted in 1973, 1981, 1988, 1997 and 2008. The system was identical for the first five editions: survey of a representative sample of the population of metropolitan France aged 15 and over, sample stratified by regions and categories of agglomeration, quota method, face-to-face questioning of the respondent’s home.
In 2018, the sample was multiplied by two (9,200 individuals interviewed), the expanded scope (extension to overseas departments and regions) and the slightly amended method. The survey covers different forms of participation in cultural life (reading books, listening to music, attending facilities and cultural events, amateur practices), while giving a large place to the uses of traditional media (television, radio, press) and, since the edition of 2008, new technologies related to the development of digital.
