Digitizing works and cultural content
The ministry supports, pursues and develops digitization programs. It is important to take into account in the future the challenges of innovation and technological developments, the imperatives of accessibility and ecological transition, and to set priorities according to the expectations and needs of citizens.
The challenges of digitalisation
The digitization of works and content is a prerequisite for the dissemination of a rich and diversified offer in all cultural sectors.
Digitization concerns physical objects such as archives, library works, museum collections, press collections, monuments, or archaeological remains. Intangible goods such as sound recordings of regional languages, recordings in the field of live performance or the experience of know-how are also digital media.
It contributes to the development of new unique cultural assets if it is accompanied by a perfect legal, scientific and technical mastery of the proposed contents and uses. Combined with taking accessibility issues into account, it makes it possible to make content available to everyone and extends knowledge and dissemination of works.
Digitization programmes
The major national cultural operators develop major digitization programmes and thus support the capture and dissemination of cultural content.
Here are some examples:
Mainly operated by the National Audiovisual Institute, the digitization of audiovisual content is part of the backup and digitization plan initiated in 1999. The digitization rate is nearly 97% in 2020. The progressive and systematic digitization of funds has also made it possible to rediscover forgotten programs and to open direct access to images and sounds. First for professionals, with the site INA médiapro, from 2004, then for the general public, with ina.frin 2006. In 2020, the INA launched its new content platforms: mediaclip for professionals and madelen for the general public.
The photographic agency of the National Museums Meeting – Grand Palais offers access to digital museum works. The France Collections 3D project has thus made it possible to model and capture in 3D emblematic works of national museums.
The National Library of France (BnF) digitizes over one million pages per month from its heritage collections.
The National Programme of Digitization and Enhancement of Cultural Content accompanies the territorial policy of digitization of cultural contents and is decentralized in all the drac of the territory.
