Teacher training
School-based teachers and musicians play an important role in transmitting, teaching the arts and raising the awareness of as many people as possible. In order to guarantee the quality of the public service of arts education, the Ministry of Culture and Communication (Directorate-General for Artistic Creation) supports and organises their training through the 11 centres or departments for training dance and music teachers (CEFEDEM) and of the nine training centres for musicians-stakeholders (CFMIDance and Music Teacher Training Centres provide training leading to the delivery of the State diploma in music and dance at the end of a two-year course. The training centres for the musicians involved provide training leading to the delivery of the university diploma in musician intervening. These institutions also play an important role in the ongoing training of teachers and practitioners.
The certificate of qualification as a music teacher and dance teacher as well as the State diploma of music teacher, dance teacher or the state diploma in theatre education may also be obtained after a test examination organised by the Ministry of Culture and Communication (Directorate-General for Artistic Creation) and the Regional Directorates for Cultural Affairs.
These diplomas are used to compete for employment in the territorial public service. Higher National Music and Dance Conservatories of Paris and Lyon offer diploma training leading to the award of a certificate of qualification as a music teacher and dance teacher.
