After the success of the first two editions, the third edition of the Nuit de la Lecture will take place on Saturday 19 January 2019. This unique national event for all audiences will once again strengthen the links between book and reading stakeholders, particularly libraries and booksellers, but also authors, publishers, schools, universities or local associations. It promotes, through free animations of all kinds, the pleasure of reading, the taste of discoveries, that of exchange and sharing.

On the occasion of this event, the libraries and bookshops of Metropolitan France and Overseas open their doors wide for an evening and propose to discover in a festive way the richness of their collections, to take advantage of their advice, to apprehend new releases as well as classical works, to exchange and play around words.

At a time when there is a great national reflection on the transformation and new missions of libraries following the presentation of the report “Voyage au pays des bibliothèques” by Erik Orsenna, the Night of Reading helps to make ever more familiar the attendance of these places of life and culture of proximity that are libraries and bookshops with all those who love books and reading but also with all those who, Too often still, they are far away.

Accessibility to books and reading for all is a necessary ambition; it is essential for the emancipation of minds and the autonomy of thought of the citizen. Libraries and bookstores have a major role to play in developing a society of informed dialogue with shared values.

That is why, for this new 2019 edition, the Night of Reading will carry the will to generalize reading for all, young people and audiences far from reading, but also more widely will be addressed to those who do not usually feel concerned.

The first two editions of the Night of Reading had mobilized libraries and bookstores with up to 4000 events celebrating the richness of these places of life and reading, more than 300 000 people had been able to enjoy the various animations.
