The Académie de France in Rome welcomes a new class of boarders every year at the Villa Medici.

The Academy of France in Rome (AFR) is an Administrative Public Institution under the supervision of the French Ministry of Culture, and fulfils three complementary missions:

  • Colbert Mission : to welcome artists and art historians in residence for a year in the Villa Medici;
  • Malraux Mission To set up an artistic program that integrates all fields of creation and is aimed at a wide audience.
  • Heritage Mission To preserve, restore and make known to the public the heritage of the Villa Medici, its gardens and its collections.

Founded in 1666 by Louis XIV, the Académie de France in Rome promotes artistic creation in all its fields through residencies for artists and researchers and cultural programming that aims to enhance the dialogue between France and Italy, in a spirit of openness to Europe and the rest of the world. It also preserves and promotes the Villa Medici, its headquarters since 1803, its gardens and art collections.
The major exhibitions, the public concerts, the film screenings, the colloquia, realized in collaboration with Italian public bodies as well as the events related to the Exhibition Theatre, organized by the residents of the Villa Medici, particularly illustrate the mission of the Academy.

Welcoming artists and researchers

Welcoming artists and researchers is the founding and central mission of the Académie de France in Rome, which makes Villa Médicis a place dedicated to training, research and creation, where residents and other residents benefit from a stimulating environment and a "suspended time" which promote the conditions of their work. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Charles Garnier, Claude Debussy, Georges Bizet, and more recently, Marie NDiaye, Pascal Dusapin, Hervé Guibert, Xavier Beauvois, Yan-Pei Ming, Inga Sempé, Philippe Rahm, Bruno Mantovani, Laurent Grasso, Véronique Ellena, Céline Minard, Yannick Haenel, Magic Malik.
