For a week, they worked on the adaptation of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city centre. They were part of a programme launched by the Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs (DRAC) of Provence-alp es-Côte d'Azur to develop new ideas for development in protected urban areas in order to create islands of freshness.
The students made several proposals, sometimes surprising of sobriety (by proposing for example to open the doors leading to the interior spaces of the neighborhood to circulate air) and sometimes more ambitious (imagining building underground circulations to connect several buildings to the old Roman road). These suggestions have led to rich reflections among the participants on the issues of air conditioning, nature in the city or changing uses.
Starting in June, a research and creative architecture residence will now take over. It will make it possible to deepen these initial reflections and to bring out new ones. It will also take place in Arles with which the DRAC has signed a partnership agreement on the ecological transition of heritage.
In parallel, the State has just launched a «green fund» to accelerate the ecological transition of the territories. It should make it possible to finance projects of local and regional authorities to strengthen their environmental performance, adapt to climate change and improve the living environment of citizens. It has a budget of €157 million in 2023 for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
