Between 1905 and 1914, the Belgian architect Octave Van Rysselberghe designed and built the villa Le Pin au Lavandou. This house, like the other achievements of this architect in Lavandou, is the result of a bold blend of Nordic architectural tradition and local constructive practices.
It consists of a basement floor, a ground floor and a floor, all with many openings of various sizes and shapes. The villa is a massive construction, with a asymmetrical facade, surmounted by a two-sided hollow tile roof. The walls are coated, with the exception of the basement floor, containing the service areas and the summer dining room, which is distinguished by a stone facing. Many aspects of the villa testify to the architect’s desire to integrate into the local building fabric, such as the loggia on the south façade, the sealed jars on the walls, the exterior fittings, etc. However, the geometric simplicity of some elements, such as the advance on the western façade, undeniably links this house to the roots of its designer. André Gide, a friend of the family, is said to have stayed several times in this villa around 1920.
