The label "Remarkable garden" in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
The label "remarkable garden", created in 2004 by the Ministry of Culture and Communication with the assistance of the National Council of Parks and Gardens, aims to recognize and promote parks and gardens open to the public.
The label "remarkable garden"
Established in 2004, the «Remarkable Garden» label distinguishes gardens and parks, open to the public, of cultural, aesthetic, historical or botanical interest, whether public or private. This state label, awarded for 5 years renewable, meets criteria of requirement and quality on the composition (organization of spaces), the integration in the site and the quality of the surroundings, the remarkable elements (water, factories, plant architectures, etc.), botanical interest, historical interest, public welcome and maintenance in respect of environmental quality. It takes into account the diversity of parks and gardens and can concern small or large gardens, historical or contemporary and all styles.
The label commits the owners to ensure regular maintenance of their garden, to open it to the visit at least 40 days in the year and 6 hours a day, to participate in the national operations (See you in the gardens and to European Heritage Days), to make available to the public information documents (map, history, botanical indications) and to affix in a place visible to the public an enamelled plaque with the logo of the label «Remarkable garden».
The label provides the following advantages :
- a mention in the documents distributed by the Ministry of Culture and on the interactive map of the remarkable gardens
- the possibility of obtaining a specific road sign bearing the ideogram ID16e, as defined by the amended decree of 24 November 1967 on road and motorway signs.
Attention: Since 1 January 2014, the label no longer allows to obtain tax approval.
What are the methods of awarding the label "Remarkable Garden"?
The file must include:
- a description accompanied by a photographic file;
- a situation map and a current plan of the garden or an aerial photograph;
- a cadastral plan or list of cadastral parcels;
- a history;
- Historical plans (if available)
- a list of outstanding features (ponds, waterfalls, statues, caves, etc.);
- the list of outstanding plants;
- a description of how the garden is managed (human resources, management plan, certified ecological management, reasoned, managed, outsourced, etc.);
- a list of the documentation made available to the public, as well as any activities for young people;
- a photographic dossier containing at least 8 images in paper or digital format;
- a written commitment to open the garden to visit at least 40 days a year, between January 1 and December 31, and at least 6 hours a day, specifying the actual opening periods and the conditions of visit (including by appointment);
- a written commitment to participate in national operations organized by the Ministry of Culture in the field of gardens (Rendez-vous aux jardins) and heritage (European Heritage Days).
The files are then examined by a working group chaired by the regional prefect or his representative. The gardens selected are the subject of a decision of the regional prefect. The criteria for awarding the label, the conditions for refusing or withdrawing the label and the checks carried out by the departments of the Ministry are specified in the 2023 circular.
